Group Class Schedule for 2011:

Puppy Basics Consult:
This 1 hour session goes over the foundational items for properly raising and creating rules, boundaries and limitations for your new puppy. Topics such as crate training, housebreaking, grooming/vet care, diet and foundational obedience will be covered. The Puppy Basics Consult is a PREREQUISITE for our "Puppy Basics Class" format (below). Only those dogs/owners who have completed a Puppy Basics Consult will be permitted to enter into the Puppy Basics Class.

Course Duration: (1) One private session
Class Length: 1 hour
Class Dates: TBS with Owner and VK9TA
Locations: VK9TA Training Center

Puppy Basics Class:
This class is for owners of puppies between 7-16 weeks* who have already completed the Puppy Basics Consult and now wish to reinforce their understanding of the "ABC's" of dog/puppy ownership. Important topics covered include: Housebreaking, crate training, socialization, nutrition, grooming/vet care, basic leash training and shaping future behaviors. Puppies will have a prime opportunity to learn manners in play, with both dogs and humans and humans will learn what is and is not acceptable behavior, and how to deal with issues such as play biting, socialization to new objects and basic leash handling, with a stress being placed on socialization with humans and unfamiliar objects to create a confident, well-adjusted puppy and future adult.

Required equipment: properly fitted flat or slip collar w/ ID Tag - NO PLASTIC SNAPS (buckle style only); quality 4-6 foot lead; favorite treats/toys, one serving of dog food (in ziplock bag) and a dog dish. We recommend you have a "puppy class bag" that you just keep ready for class each week.

Course Duration: 3 weeks (one mtg. per week)
Class length: 1 hour
Class Dates:
Each class will have specific areas of focus from those mentioned above that will be covered in a 3 class format. Dogs/handlers can enter 3-week class format at any time after Puppy Basic Consult
Location: VK9TA Training Center
Limit Dogs Per Class: 12

*Some dogs may still be eligible for puppy class if not in this age range. Please contact VK9TA with questions.

Basic Obedience Class 1 (Remote Collar):
This class is structured to teach your dog basic manners (no jumping, barking, digging) along with basic obedience commands: sit, down, recall, kennel and place command. Because of the great versatility of the remote collar system, we will also learn behavioral modification tools, such as controlling energy levels during play, stop digging, barking, chewing, basics of boundary work, etc. during this class format. Each dog will be introduced to the collar in a private lesson setting (3 private lessons), at our facility and then have unlimited group lessons to use to proof your work with us and at home. Also included is useful information in dog psychology to ensure that you realize the role you play in having a successful experience with your obedience training.

Required Equipment: Remote training collar system (if not purchased through VK9TA, collar system must first be approved by VK9TA staff to continue training); 6 foot leather or nylon leash in GOOD condition and quality connections, 20-30' long cotton line, treats/toys, closed toed shoes. Muzzles may be necessary for aggressive dogs. This will be determined by VK9TA staff prior to start of class.

  • Group Class - 1st & Last Saturday of month 11am-12

Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Test Prep Class:
During this 6-week class, we will concentrate on all requirements of the 10 item exam developed by the AKC (American Kennel Club - www.akc.org) that your dog must pass to be considered a "Canine Good Citizen." Items include: Sitting while being pet/groomed, ignoring neutral dogs, walking on loose leash, sit/down from distance, and more. All elements will be covered and proofed in our group class environment in order to prepare you for your examination by an AKC recognized CGC evaluator. VK9TA will conduct official CGC test at no additional cost for those class participants wishing to do so.

The CGC test is a precursor (not pre-requisite) to the "Therapy Dog" exam, conducted either by a representative of Delta Society or Therapy Dogs International. It is a great way to prepare your dog for the next level if you plan to go that far.

Required Equipment: 6' leather/nylon lead; flat, buckle type collar; min. 15' light long line w/snap attachment; grooming brush/tool; treats/toy

Course Duration: 6 weeks
Class Length: 1 hour
Class Date/Time:
  • Saturdays 1pm - 2pm
Location: VK9TA Training Center
Limit Dogs Per Class: 10

Therapy Dog Prep Class:
This class is designed to prepare dog/handler teams for the Therapy Dog exam, conducted by Delta Society or Therapy Dogs International. Prerequisite is the VK9TA CGC Prep Course or certificate of proof that dog has previously passed the CGC exam. All dogs will be evaluated by VK9TA before acceptance into class. No dogs that have undergone any personal protection or Schutzhund training are permitted per rules of TDI and Delta Society.

This 6 week course will continue on proofing of the CGC test items while incorporating the additional Therapy Dog test items, such as hospital equipment, restrained hug, congested environments, loud noises and more.

Required Equipment: 6' leather/nylon lead; flat, buckle type collar; min. 15' light long line w/snap attachment; grooming brush/tool; treats/toy

Course Duration: 6 weeks
Class Length: 1 hour
Class Date/Time:
  • Saturdays 1pm - 2pm
Location: VK9TA Training Center
Limit Dogs Per Class: 10

Pack Walk:
Once per month, previous, present and prospective clients of VK9TA training and boarding services are welcome to join our organized pack walk. We will do our best to alternate locations as to make it accessible to all clients at one time or another. This is not designed to be a meet and greet for all dogs present, as some will be further along on their rehabilitation process than others, but more of a fun way to exercise our dogs as a pack and get to know other owners who share common goals and training methods.

This pack walk is open to all dogs with any issues. With that being said, you should approach every dog/owner with that in mind, so use common courtesy and manners. All owners/handlers are responsible for the actions of their own dogs at all times. All dogs should be leashed at all times. No exceptions.

We would like to turn this into a very fun way to keep in touch with one another and make new friends, both two and four legged! Ideas such as having a pot-luck lunch or picnic have been suggested.

Pack walk locations/times will be posted on the online calendar. Directions will be provided.

Required equipment: Clean up bags, reliable leash/collar, good energy!

Class Duration: One meeting per month
Class Length: approx. 2 hours
Date/Time: First Sunday of every month at 9 a.m.

  • Hinckley Lake - Main Parking Lot

Group Socialization Class (Large/Small Dog):
These are ongoing classes that, simply stated, are our version of a well-controlled dog park! We have both a Large Dog (26 lbs. or more) and a Small Dog version of this class. Well adjusted small dogs are are also permitted to attend our Large Dog Socialization class.

These classes are an advanced socialization process that particularly focus on dogs that are typically excluded from Doggy Day Care and other socialization classes/environments. That being said, it is also an open forum to continue giving your already social dog even more practice effectively communicating with other dogs and helping those less "savvy" communicators develop better skills. Some dogs may need pre-training (at an additional cost) before entering the open social arena, and that will be determined at the time of your initial evaluation with VK9TA. Rules of class will be distributed at onset of class and must be adhered to at all times for the safety of your dog and others.

All dogs, large and small, must be given permission by VK9TA to enter a socialization class. For most, this will require a free socialization evaluation performed at our VK9TA facility. For more information or to set up your socialization evaluation, please call 440.638.4639 or e-mail us from our Contact Us page.

NO WALK-INS TO EITHER OF THESE CLASSES WILL BE PERMITTED TO ENTER. YOU MUST NOTIFY VK9TA STAFF VIA EMAIL OR PHONE IF YOU ARE ATTENDING PRIOR TO SCHEDULED CLASS TIME. CLASS STARTS PROMPTLY AT BELOW LISTED START TIMES. RULES WILL BE STRICTLY ENFORCED. NO CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 12 ARE PERMITTED UNLESS CLEARED BY VK9TA STAFF.
