How Dog Training Works at Sit Means Sit

We don’t believe in cookie-cutter solutions. Here’s what the process looks like from start to finish:

Step 1: Your Initial Evaluation

Everything starts with a one-on-one sit-down. A certified trainer meets your dog, watches how they respond to the environment, asks about their history and your household, and listens to what you want to achieve. This isn’t a sales pitch — it’s a genuine assessment that shapes your entire training plan.

Step 2: A Customized Training Program

Based on your evaluation, we recommend the program that fits your dog’s temperament, your goals, and your schedule. Options include Board & Train, Day Training, Private Lessons, or a combination — each one tailored to your situation.

Step 3: Training & Skill Building

Our trainers get to work. Using our proprietary attention-based system, your dog learns to focus on you first — which makes every command, correction, and reward more effective. Training happens in real environments with real distractions, so the skills transfer directly to your daily life.

Step 4: Owner Handoff & Follow-Up

Great training means nothing if the owner doesn’t know how to maintain it. Every program includes structured follow-up sessions where we teach you the techniques, timing, and communication your dog has learned to respond to. You walk away confident, not confused.

Step 5: Ongoing Group Classes

Graduation isn’t the end — it’s the beginning. Our Group Classes give you a place to practice around other dogs and owners, reinforce skills under distraction, and keep your dog’s obedience sharp for the long haul.

Training Programs for North Olmsted Dog Owners

The gold standard for fast, lasting change. Your dog lives at our Amherst facility and trains daily with our certified team. Available in three tiers:

  • 1-Week Session: A concentrated foundation of obedience and attention for dogs who need a jumpstart
  • 2-Week Session: Extended training that builds deeper reliability and tackles moderate behavioral challenges
  • 3-Week Session: Our most comprehensive immersion for dogs with significant behavioral issues or advanced training goals

Day Stay & Training

Your dog spends the day training with our professionals while you’re at work, running errands, or simply getting a break. At pickup, we walk you through everything your dog practiced and give you clear homework for the week ahead. It’s immersive training that fits a North Olmsted family’s real schedule.

Private Lessons

You, your dog, and a certified trainer — nothing else. Private sessions are fully customized to your priorities: recall, leash etiquette, impulse control, threshold manners, or whatever keeps tripping you up. This is hands-on coaching that empowers you to be your dog’s best leader.

Puppy Training

The earlier you start, the easier everything becomes. Puppies between 10 and 16 weeks are in their peak learning window, and our programs take full advantage of it. We teach structure, socialization, bite inhibition, and early obedience so your puppy grows into the kind of dog you can take anywhere.

FAQs About Dog Training in North Olmsted, OH

How close is Sit Means Sit to North Olmsted?

Our Amherst training facility is roughly 20 minutes from North Olmsted, depending on your route. We’re located at 1425 Cooper Foster Park Rd, Amherst, OH 44001, and we’re open Monday through Friday from 9am to 6pm and Saturday from 9am to 1pm.

What does the evaluation involve?

A certified trainer meets your dog in person, observes their temperament and behavior, and has an honest conversation with you about your goals and concerns. Based on that assessment, we’ll recommend the program that makes the most sense for your dog and your household.

I’ve tried other trainers and nothing worked. Why would this be different?

Many training methods teach commands in a vacuum — a quiet room with no distractions. Our attention-based system is designed specifically for the real world. We teach your dog to focus on you first, which makes every command more reliable in the environments where it actually matters: parks, sidewalks, your front door, and everywhere in between.

What’s the difference between Day Training and Board & Train?

Day Training is a daytime-only program — your dog comes in the morning and goes home each evening. Board & Train means your dog stays at our facility around the clock for one, two, or three weeks of intensive training. Board & Train delivers faster results; Day Training offers the same quality in a more gradual format that keeps your dog home each night.

At what age should I start training my puppy?

As early as 10 weeks. Puppies are neurologically primed to absorb new experiences between 10 and 16 weeks, which makes this the most impactful time to introduce structure, socialization, and foundational commands. Starting early prevents most of the behavioral problems we see in older dogs.

Can you train a dog that’s already several years old?

Without a doubt. We regularly work with adult and senior dogs who have years of ingrained habits. Old dogs absolutely can learn new tricks — it just takes the right approach. Our trainers evaluate where your dog is today and build from there, regardless of age.

My dog is fine at home but becomes a different animal outside. Can you help?

This is possibly the most common concern we hear from North Olmsted dog owners. It usually means the dog hasn’t been taught to generalize their training beyond the living room. Our programs deliberately train in varied, distracting environments so your dog learns to listen everywhere — not just at home.

Do you provide support after the training program ends?

Yes. Every program includes follow-up sessions and homework. Clients who complete a training package also gain access to our ongoing Group Classes, where you can continue reinforcing skills in a social, distraction-rich environment alongside other trained dogs.

Is off-leash training realistic for my dog?

For most dogs, yes. Off-leash reliability is one of our specialties and the foundation our training system was built on. It requires solid obedience and a strong attention-based relationship between you and your dog. Our trainers will be upfront about what’s achievable for your specific dog during the evaluation.
